Different Suitability of Olive Cultivars Resistant to Xylella fastidiosa to the Super-Intensive Planting System

Until today, only Leccino and Fs-17 (=Favolosa®) olive cultivars proved resistant to Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca (Xfp) due a low presence of bacteria in the xylem. Integrated disease management growing areas threatened by spread Xfp is crucial overcoming environmental, economic social crisis. Since EU Decision allows for plantation infected areas, there need define suitable system these cultivars. The adoption new planting systems, such as intensive super-intensive (SHD), could compensate losses restore agroecosystem. aim ascertain suitability available Xfp-resistant SHD systems that demonstrate best environmental sustainability. Hence, five-year study was established an experimental orchard (Southern Italy) order analyse main vegetative productive traits Fs-17, together with four other Italian (Cipressino, Coratina, Frantoio Urano), compared well-adapted orchards (Arbequina Arbosana), means von Bertalanffy function. results indicated cv. showed sufficient giving best-accumulated yield despite some canopy growth limitations, whereas did not show satisfactory terms both parameters, confirming its systems. These are useful optimizing integrated resistance Xfp-infected host plants.
